1. Purpose of the Action

The CGST department in Indore has intensified efforts to stop fake GST registrations and tax fraud.

In the last six months, they cancelled 100 bogus GST numbers as part of a nationwide clean-up campaign.

2. What Are Fake GST Registrations?

These are non-genuine businesses that:

Don’t operate from the address they mention,

Submit fake documents like rent agreements or electricity bills,

Are created only to claim or pass fake Input Tax Credit (ITC), which is illegal.

3. How Were They Detected?

The department used data analysis tools and AI-based algorithms to flag suspicious GST registrations.

After that, physical inspections were done to check whether the business actually existed at the given address.

If the business was missing or fake documents were found, registration was cancelled immediately.

4. Types of Fake Firms Detected

Most of the cancelled GST numbers belonged to:

Scrap dealers

Agriculture product traders

General trading businesses

These firms were misusing the system for fraudulent tax benefits.

5. Major Findings

Over 90% of these firms were not found at the registered address.

Many used forged documents to get a GST number.

Some were completely non-existent, i.e., shell companies.

6. Why Indore?

Indore gets nearly 15 GST registration applications per day, among the highest in the country.

This makes the city vulnerable to misuse, so stricter checks are now being implemented.

7. Technology & New Measures Used

The department is now using:

PAN-India verification systems

Aadhaar-based biometric authentication

Data analytics tools to cross-check registrations

These efforts are part of a nationwide drive to remove bogus GST accounts.

8. Expert Comments

A senior CGST officer said most fake firms had fake addresses or no physical presence.

Tax lawyer A.K. Lakhotia said stricter document checks and on-site photos are now required before registration is approved.

9. Impact of This Crackdown

Helps stop GST frauds and fake ITC claims.

Prevents tax revenue loss to the government.

Builds a more trustworthy tax system and protects honest taxpayers.

10. Conclusion

This crackdown by the Indore CGST department is part of a bigger national campaign to eliminate fraud in GST.

The cancellation of 100 fake GST registrations shows the department’s strong action against shell firms and misuse of the tax system.
